Dental Implant Treatment Explained

Dental implant treatment can be exciting for patients – but it also may be a little scary. The end result of your treatment will be strong, natural-looking teeth. But in order to get there, minor surgery is required. ABC Dental Implant Center of Las Vegas understands that people don’t enjoy coming to the dentist for a regular cleaning, let alone for a minor surgical procedure. They want every patient to be informed and comfortable, and have made patient care and education a top priority. Here is what you can expect from your dental implant treatment at ABC Dental Implant Center.

Step One: A Dental Consultation

Dr. Kevin Khorshid meets with every patient before recommending any treatment option. If you wish to discuss dental implants, he will first conduct a very thorough exam of your mouth. This will include x-rays, a full medical history, and a physical exam of your teeth and jaw. This is critical because not every patient is a candidate for dental implants, and some patients may require special types of implants, or even a bone graft before they are able to receive dental implant treatment.

Once Dr. K has determined you are a candidate, he will make some treatment recommendations. You are encouraged to ask any questions that you may have, and you can even go home to think about it, if you need to. Once you’ve both determined that dental implant treatment is the right course, Dr. K will take measurements and impressions of your mouth. These impressions will be used to custom-fit your implants and crowns so that they match your natural teeth in size and shape. He will also color-match and choose a shade for your crowns, so that no one will ever be able to tell you have dental implants.

Step Two: The Procedure

The day of your dental implant treatment, you should follow all of Dr. K’s pre-procedure instructions. This may involve taking antibiotics or using special mouth rinses. When you arrive at the office, you will be given a cleaning by a dental hygienist to reduce the presence of bacteria in and around your teeth. Dr. Khorshid will then prep the area for the implant.

He will numb your gums, tongue, and cheek around the area to receive the implant. First, he will apply a numbing gel and will then inject the area with a local anesthetic. He will leave your mouth to numb for several minutes. He will come back and test the area for feeling. It is crucial that you speak up if you can feel anything during his tests. The dental implant procedure won’t be painful at all if you are numb.

Once the area is fully numb, Dr. Khorshid will make a small incision into the gum. He will then drill a very tiny hole into your jaw bone. This is where the titanium implant will be inserted. Once all dental implants are in place, he will place temporary crowns over the implants so that you aren’t left with a gap while you heal.

During the healing process, you should follow all of Dr. K’s instructions. Be sure to take your antibiotics every day to prevent infection, use your mouth rinses as directed, and report any excessive bleeding or discomfort to the office immediately.

Step Three: The Dental Crown

Once your jaw and gums have healed from the dental implant procedure, you will return to the office. Dr. K will examine the area to ensure proper healing, and will then remove your temporary crowns. He’ll show you your brand-new, custom designed crowns and then cement them permanently in place over the implants.

Caring For Your Dental Implants

You care for dental implants the same way you care for your natural teeth. If your tooth loss was due to gum disease or tooth decay, you may want to make an extra commitment to take better care of your remaining teeth and implants.

Dental implants should be brushed and flossed twice per day, just as your natural teeth are. While you can eat and drink normally, take care not to eat super sticky, gummy, hard, or extremely hot foods on your implants. This will reduce the chance of cracking or breaking your crowns. You should also be sure to continue to keep your regular, six-month checkups with Dr. Khorshid’s office for cleanings and exams. When properly cared for, dental implants can last a lifetime, and can help you keep your remaining teeth.
